Sonic Boom Six
Sonic Boom Six - O2 Academy, Newcastle - Sunday 24th January 2010
Last Sunday I was lucky enough to photograph Reel Big Fish with two great support bands. Sonic Boom Six and one of my all time favorite bands - Big D & The Kids Table. I liked some of the images from each set that much that I felt each band from this show deserved there own blog. So here I am, a week late writing my first blog and posting up images from Sonic Boom Six's set.
Shootingwize this whole show was pretty easy to shoot. It was my first show in nearly 2 months but a great show to get back into it. I have shot SB6 quite a few times before so I know what to expect but never in the main academy. I missed them last time they played in their (with Reel Big Fish in 2008) so I was glad to arrive on time to this show and actually see them. The lighting was pretty impressive for a support band in the Newcastle Academy which made shooting a little easier. Lots of nice purple lights with just the right amount of smoke to not ruin the pictures but give a great effect. Stupidly though I shot this whole set on a stupidly high ISO which you can see from all the noise in the images. It was my first time shooting live music in a while so not everything was going to go right!
Anyhow, blog of Big D and RBF to come soon. Was shooting this show for Change The Record. View all the images HERE, read faye's review HERE or check out Faye's Interview with Big D HERE or her interview with Reel Big Fish HERE

Jamie T
Jamie T - Northumbria SU, Newcastle - Thursday 28th January 2010
This show was scheduled nearly four months earlier but due to Jamie being ill he had to move the hole of his tour. Since first catching Jamie T live in the summer last year (Click HERE to view photographs from that show) I have become a massive fan with the release of his second album 'Kings & Queens' being one of my most played albums of 2009. So I was super excited about attending this show and I was not disappointed.
Support act 'Chester P' who I missed most of due to arriving later then planned was pretty average with his freestyling political hip-hop. Really was not fused I missed the majority of his set. Norhtumbria's SU was full to bursting tonight for this show, it was set to be a great night - it could have been better if the price of a pint of Fosters was not £3.95 which is an absolute joke - but I guess I was there for the music and not the beer.
Jamie T came on stage at around 9PM, he played and absolute blinder of a set and was clearly well again and happy to be on the road and playing shows. Shootingwize it was a pretty straight forward show. The lighting was varied throughout the set but still very impressive. Probably the best I have seen yet at Northumbria's SU. I was able to shoot a lot of the show at 1/160 to 1/200 with ISO anywhere from 800-1600. So it was pretty nice bright lighting which made for an interesting set of images. Jamie spent the majority of the set changing between an electric or acoustic guitar or he would be running around the stage with the mic in his hand. He is a really great showman. When he had guitar in hand and if he was not singing he would be at the front of stage working the crowd.
I have uploaded about 20 or so images from the set below, I was shooting for Change The Record. The full set can be seen HERE and you can read my review HERE.

Taste of Chaos Tour 2009
O2 Academy, Newcastle - Monday 30th November 2009
ft. Everytime I Die, In Flames, Killswitch Engage
So its been nearly 2 months since I attend a show, the last one I was at was in fact the Taste of Chaos tour back on the 30th November 2009. So im starting to really freak out as I have the urge for live music. But I'm going have to wait as the next gig I'm at is not until Sunday - This is when I see/shoot Big D & the Kids Table - One of my favorite bands supporting Reel Big Fish. - Whihc I am really excited about. So in the mean time to get me away from all the time I have been spending on my business I decided to pull out a few images from the Taste of Chaos show - the last one I was at that never got uploaded fully!
A great line up on the tour but a real tough show to shoot. All due to the lighting being next to impossible with the energetic movement from band members on stage. Not fully my cup of tea but a great gig all the same. I have uploaded a collection of my favorite shots of the show below.
January has been such a quit month on the gig front - but there are a few good tours coming up that I shall be at including : Jamie T Tour, NME Tour ft. Maccabees, Kerrang Tour ft. All Time Low as well as Lostprophets tour and hopefully Mika. There are also a few other shows that are maybes but it all depends on work really. I just hope things pick up and I can get out to at least a show a week!
Well that's enough of my rambling for today - Hope to be posting a few more blogs up in the next month.

The 2009 Blog
So we are 10 days into 2010 and I’ve been meaning to write this blog for a week or so now but I’ve been to busy/lazy and snowed in to get round to actually finish writing it.
So a full year has passed and we are now in 2010 – The last year has flown by but it’s been a really good one. I have never taken as many photographs as I have in the last 12 months. I have got to so many amazing shows and had the chance to photograph and work with so many great people in the studio.
My year kick started pretty fast with my photography. Back in January, I got a call from Lisa (now my business partner) who runs a casting agency called NE8 Castings. She wanted me to shoot some of her actors and models for their online portfolios on her website. After the first shoot things had gone so well that we were already in talks with going into business together with our own photography studio (New Age Studios).
By March this year we had our own studio set up and running, the website took a little longer to get up and running and didn’t launch until September. The business has gone from strength to strength over the last year slowly building a name and a reputation as a photography company in Gateshead and Newcastle.
The White Lies
The White Lies - O2 Academy, Newcastle - Sunday 29th November 2009
For some reason I have had a crazy few days, on Sunday night though I managed to squeeze in shooting The White Lies. I had heard good things about their lighting set up these guys toured with so I was really looking forward to shooting them. As I hoped I was really not disappointed. A sold out academy on a rainy sunday evening were in for a great show.
The first song was very smokey making shooting hard but once that cleared slightly the light show was truly stunning. I only have one shot I like of the bassist but the other 21 images I have posted in this blog are of the singer/guitarist. He was pretty active on stage making for a great subject to shoot. Was able to shoot around 1000 ISO for most of the show and lighting was good enough for me to concentrate on the subjects I was photographing rather then my camera settings. After the 3 songs in the pit I couldn't resist going up on the balcony to get a shot of the full venue. Got a cracker that im pretty happy with and really shows the lighting at its best!

Elliot Minor
Elliot Minor - Northumbria SU, Newcastle - Saturday 21st November 2009
So last Saturday I was scheduled to shoot two shows on the same night. Originally both shows were going to be at the O2 Academy in Newcastle, one upstairs and one down stairs so I could easily switch between both shows. But the downstairs show (Elliot Minor) got moved from the Academy to Northumrbia's Students Union across town a few weeks before.
I shot the first band on the bill at the Yashin show upstairs at the academy, local boys "This Way Up" which i was able to make and I then whizzed across town to the SU to make the Elliot Minor show in time to catch the support band Me Vs Hero. But things didn't quite go to plan, got to the SU to find there had been issues with the Guest Lists and passes, and the show had started nearly an hour earlier then scheduled. So once I finally got in to the show I was there just in time for Elliot Minor missing Me vs Hero altogether which sucked a bit. Wouldn't have got in at all but luckily I have worked a few times for the guy who puts on all the shows at the SU. So after a quick phonecall 5 minutes later I had my self an AAA pass for what was left of the show.
So Elliot Minor came on stage, last time I had shot these guys at this venue the light shows was pretty impressive with lots of cool purples, pinks and blues. But this time the light rig was pretty basic and really quite boring to shoot with. Enough light to shoot at 1600 ISO or less which made for a pretty straight forward gig. Got my images within one song so switched to my telephoto to get a few close ups and wait for some different shots.
I got the pass in the end in agreement that I would get a shot from the balcony of the hole venue as it was the first time they had used the venue in this way for a show. So I then stood on the balcony for the next 20 mins waiting for the house lights to come on so I could get the above shot. Took far to long for the house lights to come on but when they did I was more then happy with the shot I got! Below are a few of my favorite shots from the show.
Rise Against
Rise Against - O2 Academy, Newcastle - Wed 18th November 2009
Its been nearly a full week since my last blog, really gonna try get my ass in gear and try and get all my blogging up to date as I have a few older things I wanna post up on here in the coming few weeks. Things are starting to slow dwon on the music front now with the run up to Christmas. I'm pretty sure I only have maybe 4-5 more gigs left this year. I attended Emmure and Caliban last Tuesday, but im not a fan of either bands and im not in any hurry to post up a blog with images from that shows, the lighting was really hard work and was the first gig in nearly a year that I have had to pull out the 1.8 prime.
Lily Allen
Lily Allen - O2 Academy, Sheffield - Monday 16th November 2009
So on Monday night I made the 5 hour round trip from Newcastle to Sheffield to catch Lily Allen on the first night of the UK leg of the Brilly Allant Tour. For those that know me quite well will already know that I have always been a BIG Lily Allen fan - Her music as well as Lily herself. This was my first time catching her live and I have to say it was easily in my top 3 gigs of the year. Her vocals where spot on for the hole show even though she has been ill with both bronchitis and laryngitis for the last 6 weeks. I honestly could not fault her vocally.
To think she is only 24 years old and has achieved so much - but from seeing her live tonight you can tell why shes on top of her game. She truly loves what she does and is an amazing performer. She was supported by a rapper called Example - hes a bit like a younger version of Calvin Harris. Not going to stick any images of him from the show up on this blog as I have so many I want to stick up of Lily.
So shooting this show was different to what I was used to, I have never shot in this academy before. It was probably one of the nicer larger venues I have been in. I have to say the lighting was a damn sight better tonight to what I'm used to as the Newcastle Academy. I'm pretty happy with my set of images but I think I could have done a bit better. When Lily first came on stage I think for the first time in my life shooting a show I was a bit star struck - I don't think the fact that she looked amazingly hot helped. Standing at her feet while she struts her stuff in front of my camera was a bit much for me and I had to give my self a kick up the ass to get my mind back on taking the shots I needed and enjoying the show after the first 3 songs.
She was all over the stage and quite a challenge to shoot but because she had two spot lights on her for the hole set it made shooting a dream, meaning I could shoot at 500-800 ISO no problem. Overall I'm happy with my shots and really enjoyed the show. Have a look at all my pictures below and I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Pulled Apart by Horses & Manchester Orchestra
O2 Academy, Newcastle - Wednesday 4th November 2009
Wanted to get these online on Friday morning but I was just to busy and then I had to go to Hull on Friday evening - I had to attend a lecture in Lincoln on Saturday morning. Then I traveled back to Newcastle on Saturday night and I've been at work all day today. Now I've had my tea and settled I can quickly stick this blog up.
Pictures of Pulled Apart by Horses and Manchester Orchestra - the two bands that support Biffy Clyro on wednesday night. Both bands are supporting Biffy on the hole of the UK tour.
Pulled Apart by horses are a Leeds based band who were really enjoyable live - easy to get into and put on a really great show
Manchester Orchestra from Georgia, US took to the stage next - I didn't enjoy this quite as much as Pulled Apart but they still put on a brilliant show. Always nice to have to quality support bands at a show.
The lighting for both bands where exactly the same lighting which did not change at all throughout both bands sets - not great for variety but non the less a straight forward to shoot. Red front of house lights (a nightmare on their own) and blue side lighting which were part of the lighting set up that Biffy where using. A nice combination of blue and red to shoot with but some of the images look like you are looking though some 3D glasses which I didn't like.

Below I have posted up a selection of my favorite photographs of both bands.
Biffy Clyro
Biffy Clyro - O2 Academy, Newcastle - Wednesday 4th November 2009
Finally up to date with/on to of my blogging and gigs. Last night I was lucky enough to get a pass for Biffy Clyro at the Academy. A sold out show which I was really looking forward to. Arrived at venue and got in with no issues at all - before the show was only told I could shoot the band whos press I went though, but that was not the case which was class meaning I could shoot all the bands on the bill. The two support bands were 'Pulled Apart by Horses' and 'Manchester Orchestra' - I'm going to post up blogs for both these bands individually tomorrow.
I have to say the light show for the Biffy set was something special, making it pretty straight forward to shoot. Was able to bring the ISO down from 3200 to 1000-1250 at times. The light show got better and better throughout the show and was probably one of the best light set ups I have seen used in the Academy. Really gutted the didn't have there massive strip back lights on for any of the first 3 songs when I was photographing but either way I really enjoyed the show and I'm really happy with my photographs.
